Guide to Choosing a Baby Pillow

During the first months of life, every choice related to a newborn’s sleep has a direct impact on their well-being and correct postural development. Sleep takes up a large part of the day, and ensuring the right conditions is essential to support safe and harmonious growth.

Among the most delicate aspects, one of the most widely discussed is the use of a pillow. In the first months, a baby’s physical structure is still developing: the spine is flexible, the head is proportionally heavier than the body, and movement control is limited. For this reason, every element introduced into the sleep space must meet precise criteria for ergonomics and safety.

In many cases, a baby pillow is not a necessity. On the contrary, if used inappropriately or too early, it may interfere with correct posture or increase the risk of suffocation.

That is why it is important to understand when to start using one, at what age it is recommended, and which baby pillow to choose according to your child’s real needs.

Baby Pillow: Yes or No in the First Months?

According to the guidelines of most international paediatric societies, it is preferable to avoid using a pillow during the first months of life. The main reason is linked to sleep safety: a traditional pillow can increase the risk of suffocation, overheating or encourage incorrect sleeping positions.

The safest sleeping position for a newborn remains on their back, on a firm mattress and without any additional objects in the cot, including a pillow.

However, there are anatomical or anti-flat head baby pillows designed to be used under close supervision and only in specific situations: for example, in cases of asymmetrical head shape or to provide more stable support during supervised awake time. In these cases, advice from your paediatrician is essential.

When to Start Using a Baby Pillow and Which One to Choose

The most suitable time to start introducing a pillow is generally after the age of one, preferably between 12 and 18 months, when the child has developed greater postural control, the skeletal structure is more stable, and the risk of suffocation during sleep is drastically reduced. At this age, you can consider using a specific early childhood pillow that is low, breathable and made with certified materials.

To choose the right baby pillow, it is important to assess a few key features before purchasing, such as:

  • Height and firmness: it should be low, ergonomic and non-deformable, to support the head without altering neck alignment.

  • Breathability: it is preferable to choose technical fabrics or natural fibres that allow air to circulate, reducing the risk of heat build-up.

  • Certified materials: it is better to opt for hypoallergenic covers and fillings free from toxic substances, with OEKO-TEX or equivalent certifications.

  • Anatomical shape: shaped models help distribute the weight of the head more evenly and prevent localised pressure.

  • Easy washing: the possibility to remove and wash the cover is a practical and important feature for everyday hygiene.

In summary, the use of a baby pillow should never take place before the child turns one, except in exceptional cases indicated by the paediatrician. If introduced, functionality, safety and certified quality remain the most reliable criteria.
