What is Babywearing?

Babywearing, an English term that literally means “wearing the baby,” is an ancient custom that is rediscovering an important popularity in Western countries.

The practice of carrying one’s baby in close contact with one’s body, using supports such as swaddling bands or ergonomic baby carriers, is a choice that goes far beyond mere practicality, turning into a true lifestyle, full of benefits for both baby and parents.

But what makes babywearing so special?

In this article, we will explore its significance, advantages, possible disadvantages, and reasons why more and more parents are choosing to “wear” their babies.

Newborn Babywearing: Pros and Cons

Carrying one’s baby in a swaddle or baby carrier offers many advantages, but it also involves having to face some challenges. Using a swaddle can take some practice to be sure of positioning the baby correctly: although practicable as long as weight permits, it can sometimes become challenging to carry older babies for long periods.

However, the benefits of babywearing for the infant and parents are unquestionable. Let us analyze them in more detail:

  • Cognitive and emotional development. The essence of babywearing lies in the physical closeness between parent and baby, which meets a primary need of the newborn: to feel protected and cuddled. This close contact reminds the baby of the time spent in the womb, promoting peaceful and harmonious development and reducing stress levels.

  • Improved thermoregulation. The parent’s body, through an exchange of heat with the baby, helps maintain a constant temperature for the infant: this is especially useful in the first months of life, when the baby has not yet developed the ability to self-regulate, thus reducing the risk of temperature swings that could weaken his or her immune defenses.

  • Prevention of physical problems. Using a well-designed ergonomic carrier ensures that the baby maintains correct posture, with the spine in its natural position and the hips in the “M” position, preventing problems such as dysplasia. Carrying the baby in a sling helps prevent plagiocephaly (or flattening of the skull) and reduces symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux.

  • Improved sleep. The rhythm of the parent’s heartbeat and breathing conveys a feeling of calm, helping to soothe the infant. Close contact inhibits the production of cortisol, the stress hormone, promoting a relaxed state that positively affects the baby’s sleep quality.

  • Strengthening bonding. Constant physical contact increases the production of oxytocin, the love hormone, promoting a deeper emotional bond with the parent. In particular, in the newborn, proximity to the mother is crucial: it influences the development of brain areas involved in learning and the ability to react to stress. Due to close contact with the baby, there is also a physiological increase in the production of prolactin, and at the same time, breast milk, thus facilitating breastfeeding.

  • Physical development. Stimulated by its surroundings, the infant interacts with and receives stimuli from outside, thus enhancing its physical development, primarily its sense of balance, which is essential for keeping in contact with the parent’s body.

  • Increased convenience for parents. One of the most important benefits of babywearing is certainly its practicality: whether in or out of the home, carrying an infant in a sling provides greater freedom of movement for parents. Not having to use a stroller makes everyday activities, such as shopping, walking, or doing household chores, easier, while still maintaining closeness with the baby. Its versatility makes it an ideal choice for families who want to strengthen the bond with their child while maintaining a practical and dynamic life.

Whether you choose to use a baby carrier or an ergonomic baby carrier, what is important is to make sure that you are using a safe support that respects the baby’s physiology: The true meaning of babywearing lies in a daily gesture of love and care, which accompanies the baby in his or her first months of life and creates a solid base for a peaceful and happy growth.
