What is the Montessori Tower and What is it used for?

Also known as the learning tower, the Montessori tower is a pedagogical tool designed to support a child’s autonomy by encouraging the development of sensory and cognitive skills and fine motor skills.

Like all Montessori tools and games, it has the function of stimulating curiosity and improving concentration, facilitating participation in daily activities through the imitation of gestures and practical skills that are usually the prerogative of adults.

On one hand, therefore, it encourages the sharing of the main moments that mark family life, from preparing meals to cleaning, and on the other, it has an educational purpose by allowing the youngest children to become independent through learning skills that are fundamental for growth.

But what exactly is the Montessori tower?

From a structural point of view, it is nothing more than a kind of stool equipped with steps at the base and a protective frame at the top: usually made of wood, it is also equipped with special handles that allow the child to climb up, stand, or descend independently. Reaching the same height as adults, the child can thus carry out various activities and, at the same time, feel an active part of family life, expanding their range of exploration and experiencing the world from a new point of view.

From what age you can use the Montessori tower

From what age can the Montessori tower be used? This is certainly one of the most common questions among new parents approaching the tool for the first time.

As is often the case when it comes to choosing a Montessori toy, the answer derives from the child’s motor development: as a general rule, it is advisable to start using it at around 18 months, i.e., when the child can walk in complete safety and therefore to descend and ascend the steps of the learning tower completely independently.

However, there are some models that can be used as early as 12 months, provided that the child is able to stand on its own. Because of its versatility, it is possible to use the Montessori tower at different stages of growth, even up to pre-school age. Each age group will therefore have its own specific use, let’s look at some of them:

  • From 18 months to 2 years of age. At this stage, the child loves to explore and climb, so the Montessori tower is used to encourage observation and strengthen his or her motor skills through learning small gestures, made possible by imitating a model. By internalising the acquired behaviour, the little one will thus be able to organise information and stimuli from the external environment and gain confidence in their own abilities.

  • 2 to 3 years. In the 2 to 3 year age range, the learning tower is used specifically to promote the child’s independence, for example, as a table-level game or as a support to help the little one wash his hands or teeth, or involve him in food preparation.

  • From 3 to 5 years. At this stage, the child has already begun to acquire a good deal of independence and awareness; now it is time to put his or her skills to the test. The use of the Montessori tower can be useful here to offer him support in completing certain activities on his own, such as kneading, mixing, washing dolls or toys, etc.

How to choose a Montessori tower

Now that we have looked at what a Montessori tower is and what it is used for, it is time to find out which one to buy.

There are different types on the market, so it’s not always easy to find your way around: in addition to the classic fixed towers, equipped with a stable structure, you can opt for convertible models that can also be used in a different form and for different purposes, transforming themselves for example into a table with a chair for reading or drawing or into a practical piece of furniture for storing toys.

Accessorised versions can integrate a blackboard or even a removable slide to further stimulate creativity and turn learning into playing. In addition to the models, there are some fundamental criteria to consider when choosing a Montessori tower. The main ones are:

  • Materials. The first step in choosing a quality product is to make sure that it has been made from natural, non-toxic, and durable materials, such as wood, which is not only among the safest but also guarantees durability. Orienting oneself towards specialised brands is fundamental in this case for a safe choice for the well-being of the child.

  • Dimensions. Proportions are another element not to be overlooked when it comes to choosing a Montessori tower: a base of at least 30 cm is recommended to guarantee good stability, while the height of the foot support should be 50 cm.

  • Safety. The presence of a handrail and barrier is indispensable to guarantee adequate protection for the child, avoiding accidental falls.

The choice of a model that is safe, stable, and suitable for the child’s age is fundamental to guarantee a serene and stimulating use. The Montessori tower will thus become not only a practical support but also an ally in discovery and growth, allowing unforgettable moments together that will foster the development of skills and autonomy.
